Anxious Olivia calms downs with a little help
Olivia came to live with us when she was about 7 months old. She was a big skinny goof ball and had some serious attitude problems. She doesn’t “speak” much about her past but we know bits and pieces. We know she had to fight for her food and that she didn’t always feel safe. When Olivia joined our household it was challenging and very disruptive for Nelson, Lily and me. There were some days that I really wished Mom could send her back. Mom assured me this was not an option and that we had our work cut out for us. We persevered. Mom had to repeatedly convince Olivia that as the youngest and newest member she was at the bottom of the pack. This meant she had to wait for her food in the correct pecking order.
Rescuing a dog that has an unstable history can be challenging for the family but don’t forget it is also challenging and stressful for dog who is having to adjust. Olivia didn’t know what was happening. Added to this she is deaf and cannot hear the soothing tones of humans voices. One moment she was living with one family and the next moment she was living with us. She was very confused and anxious when she arrived. She didn’t know that Lily is a bit of a princess and seriously doesn’t like to share her bed. Nelson is a gentle little soul but will tell you when you are annoying him and she had to understand that my teddy is OFF LIMITS.
During this adjustment period mom found a product that really helped Olivia to feel more calm. It is a Serenity Formula by Herbal Pet made with a blend of herbs and vitamins & minerals designed to calm pets when they are feeling stressed. After a week of adding it daily to her food we could begin to see a real difference. I told mom we should give her the whole tub to eat but mom just gave me “that look”.
Serenity Formula is designed to help reduce nervousness and aggression in pets. These behaviours can occur as a result of genetics, upbringing, nutritional deficiencies or circumstances (like moving or a new home or changes in environment). Whatever the reason, Serenity Formula should help your cat or dog feel happier and calmer.
The Serenity Formula just took the edge off Olivia feeling anxious and over the last year she has had to learn that she would always get food, never go hungry and that she was safe. Simply, she had to learn that we were her family and her place within it was safe. We would love her, care for and provide her with stability. This stability comes in the form of rules, providing discipline in the right way (although mom still has to regularly scold me for digging in the bin… I just can’t resist, it smells soooooo good), regular exercise, training and love.
Like humans, us dogs don’t live removed from our experiences. They often shape our behaviours. Olivia didn’t come from the best experiences and this shaped who she was when she arrived in our household. This doesn’t mean that we can’t change or learn new behaviours, it just sometimes takes some time and patience. You can teach a dog new tricks, no matter what age they are. Olivia is still an exuberant teenager and tests the boundaries at ever opportunity. More importantly, every day she becomes more loving and relaxed. She has turned into a velco dog and loves to lie right next to (or on top of) dogs and humans. Not always realising that she is 50kgs! She is a big snuggly girl and each day develops into the dog she was intended to be.
